We found Sydney’s scarves from Season three of the bear

sydney’s scarves and the use of “uniforms” in The Bear

The Bear is a show about details. And there are many details to love throughout its three seasons. One of my favorite details is the role that clothing and accessories play in several characters’ narratives. You can learn so much about everyone by looking deeper into not just what they’re wearing, but why and when and how. Carmy is a master of his craft and therefore gravitates towards simple, well-crafted pieces like his signature loopwheeled t-shirt. Richie’s journey of self-discovery crescendos in Season 2 as he makes his “I wear suits” declaration, serving as an external signal to himself and others that he has learned to respect himself on a new level. And then, of course, there’s Sydney and her beloved scarves.

Pattern Play: Sydney’s scarves let us into her world

Ayo Edebiri dazzles this season in what has become her signature accessory - a fun patterned headscarf. The Bear’s costume designer Courtney Wheeler has a reputation for collaborating with actors, having worked closely with Jeremy Allen White at the beginning of the series to craft authentic looks for Carmy. Wheeler has said she would pick out a selection of scarves for Sydney, but that the choice was up to Edebiri about which one to wear on a particular day. In a 2022 interview with Vulture, costume designer Courtney Wheeler noted “The choice of picking out a bandana for the day is what makes Sydney feel good because she constantly feels at the mercy of the world.”

If you look carefully at the patterns of Sydney’s scarves, you can’t help but think about what she must have been thinking that morning when making her selection, whether it was trout, astrological patterns, or mushrooms. And, as one user pointed out on the r/TheBear subreddit pointed out, Sydney’s scarf patterns even make their way into the minds, and culinary creations, of other characters. For instance, we get a nice closeup of the dish Carmy was laboring over (below), and the sauce pattern looks unmistakably similar to that of Sydney’s scarf from earlier that day.
